4.2 Engine Start

Preconditions

  • Aircraft powered (EXT PWR or APU)
  • APU AVAIL
  • APU BLEED → ON
  • Fuel Pumps → ON
  • Beacon → ON
  • Parking Brake → AS REQUIRED
  • ATC clearance for pushback/start received

Crew Coordination

PF: “Start Engine 2”
PM: “Starting Engine 2”


Engine Start Sequence

PM:

  1. ENG MODE Selector → IGN/START
  2. ENG 21 MASTER → ON

ECAM Monitoring (PM)

Monitor the following parameters:

  • N2 rotation within 30 seconds
  • Oil pressure increasing
  • At ~20% N2 → fuel introduction
  • EGT rise within limits

Standard Callouts

  • “N2 increasing”
  • “Fuel Flow”
  • “EGT rising”
  • “Engine 21 stabilized”

  1. Repeat for Engine 12

After Start Actions

  • ENG MODE Selector → NORM
  • APU BLEED → OFF (as required)
  • APU → OFF (if not needed)
  • PACKS → ON

After Start Flow (PM)

  • Anti-Ice → AS REQUIRED
  • Flight Controls → CHECK
  • Flaps → SET for takeoff
  • Pitch Trim → SET

Key Notes

  • Always start Engine 21 first
  • Closely monitor ECAM during start
  • Abort start in case of abnormal indications
